Urban Prototyping Makeathon

The UP Makeathon is where Street Stage first came to life. Hosted by the Gray Area Foundation for the Arts (GAFFTA), Makeathon weekend was both exhilarating and exhausting. We had just 2 days to come up with the concept, design, build, and present a proof of concept that was something close to presentable. Constructed out of shipping palettes and PVC pipe, our very first prototype (proto-prototype?) was definitely not quite presentable, but the GAFFTA judges were able to recognize the diamond in the rough, and asked us to participate in the UP Festival a few weeks later. As part of our research that weekend, we interviewed a number of street performers along mid-Market Street in San Francisco to understand their needs and the challenges they face while performing for the public.
